ChatGPT For SEO - DemandSage

There’s a revolution taking place in the world of SEO and digital marketing right now. Its name is ChatGPT, and although it’s just an artificial intelligence tool, we’re calling it revolutionary because it can permanently change how search engine optimization is done. It’s on the minds of many in the digital marketing space, and thoughts about it are mixed in nature as some marketers fear that it may finish many jobs in the marketing space.

But we feel that if used wisely, it may make the job of SEO far simpler and easier. How? That’s what we’ll explore in this article. We’ll also explore a couple of things that you should not do using ChatGPT for SEO. Let’s start!

12+ Things You Should Be Doing Using ChatGPT For SEO

There are a number of things that ChatGPT can do for your SEO needs, but so far we’ve recognized 5 major areas where it can help you. Here they are:

#1. Generating FAQs And Featured Snippets

ChatGPT is very good at generating summaries of anything. So it can help you quickly generate FAQs and featured snippets on any topic or content that you have written. Here’s an example:

Most of the time, the summaries and FAQs generated by it are on-the-point, but sometimes it generates a couple of useless questions, too, which you should discard from your stack of FAQs before putting them up on site. The same goes for featured snippets, too — before you put them up on your site, make sure that you go through them to ensure that they make sense and don’t leave crucial information missing.

#2. Analyzing The Content Of Competitors

ChatGPT can help you analyze the content of competitors and figure out easily what topics they are covering the most in their posts. Right now, competitive analysis is a feature of mostly expensive SEO tools, but after the arrival of ChatGPT, that can change to some extent as it can be used to analyze the nature of their content.

Analyzing The Content

For instance, when you run an article published by one of your competitors through ChatGPT, it can provide you with a lot of useful information about that article (i.e. keyword density, content depth, number of paragraphs, patterns in keyword distribution, etc.), as you can see in the screenshot shared below.

That way, every tech-savvy website owner may be able to analyze the content of their competitors in greater detail now with the help of ChatGPT.

#3. Generating Metadata

ChatGPT can also generate meta descriptions, headline variations, alt-text for images, and other metadata for your blog posts. If you give instructions in a proper way, it can also generate this metadata as per the specifics provided by you. For instance, you can ask it to generate a meta description about a certain post that is shorter than 150 characters and includes your target keyword, as shown below.

Similarly, you can generate headline variations, alt text for images, and other metadata too, as per your preferences and needs. Just make sure that the commands you give are descriptive enough to give you your desired outcome.

#4. Composing Regular Expressions

Regular Expressions are one of the most important yet most under-utilized features of search engines. They can be used in tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to filter results in various types of reports, but since they require complex formulas and strings to be used, they’re not utilized by most SEOs.

Composing Regular Expressions

That was the story till now. However, it may change soon, thanks to ChatGPT. The tool is not good at generating only text-based content but also at generating complex formulas for various purposes. You can ask it to generate regular expressions for a particular type of query, and it will generate the same for you. Then you can pass on the generated expression to Search Console or Google Analytics, providing a list of pages on your site that match certain criteria.

#5. Analyzing SEO Data

The work of SEO includes dealing with a lot of data. In fact, sometimes we are sifting through so many Excel sheets and so much data that we wonder whether we are SEO professionals or data scientists! Lol.

And we must say, analyzing this data, even with tools like Excel, can still be a herculean task. Fortunately, ChatGPT may help us with that as well. It can generate complex Excel formulas for you that you can use in your sheets to analyze data more effectively and efficiently. Moreover, it can also provide you with less-known tips and tricks related to Excel that can make data analysis a breeze.

#6. Generating Descriptions For Business Profiles And Directory Listings

ChatGPT can also generate surprisingly good profile descriptions about your business. Those descriptions can then be put on your Google Business profile, your directory listings, your social media profiles, and other such places where you describe various things about your business.

Generating Descriptions

Just tell it how long you want your description to be, where your business is located, and what it does, and within a few seconds, you’ll have a description ready for you. You can also generate multiple variations of the description in one go!

#7. Generating Emails For Link-Building Campaigns

Link building is one of the most tedious tasks in SEO. It requires reaching out to dozens of website owners every week for acquiring high-quality backlinks. Most of these outreach campaigns are carried out over email by website owners, and that’s the issue — those who use expensive link-building software can automate their link-building outreach campaign, but those who don’t must prepare each email on their own then follow up on the emails they send. This puts them at a huge disadvantage in comparison to competitors, who can do all of this at scale in an automated fashion through costly SEO tools.

Generating Emails

That scenario changes now because, with ChatGPT, anyone can generate their link-building outreach emails quickly. You can also generate personalized emails with a single command if you supply the names of all website owners to whom they are going to send the email. Then it remains just a matter of copy-and-paste to send those emails. Follow-up emails can also be generated quickly, depending on whether you get any response or not.

#8. Organizing Keywords Into Groups

You can also use ChatGPT to organize your keywords in a better way. Once you supply all your keywords into ChatGPT, it can organize them into various groups. That way, you can generate keyword groups based on location, length, topics, subtopics, similarity, etc. Till now, organizing them in this manner either required expensive software or manual labor using Excel spreadsheets, but ChatGPT can totally automate and streamline this process for you.

#9. Generating Content Ideas

Last but certainly not least, you can use ChatGPT to generate content ideas and get over your creative blocks. Not only it can suggest you various types of content around any topic or keyword, but also it can help you beat your writer’s block by expanding a paragraph if you get stuck somewhere while writing an article.

This can supercharge your productivity and help you generate more content for your SEO efforts, whether it’s in the form of your own blog posts or guest posts for some other places.

#10. Finding Sites To Outreach For Link Building

You have written an amazing article and also optimized it properly for search engines, but it is still not performing and showing results. It’s time to change your strategy and focus on link building, but to do outreach, you need to find sites that are relevant to your content. If you do the manual research, it will take you a very long. Luckily on ChatGPT, you can write a command such as “Recommend Popular Blogs on Automotive Industry with their URLs.” Here is the result.

URLs Of Sites For Outreach

As you can see from the above screenshot, it recommended ten blogs on the Automotive industry with their URLs now; you can note them down and regenerate the response to get more websites.

#11. For Generating Outlines For Your Content

To create an outline for your content, you need to do manual competitor research and find what heading most competitors are covering and what type of content they are adding to their pages. It will take you plenty of time to create an outline for any content if you choose to do manual research. But with ChatGPT, you can just write a command such as Create an in-depth outline for the keyword “How To Wash Your Car At Home” and include subheadings like H2 and H3.

Outline Generated By ChatGPT

You can see the result in the above screenshot, and it has generated an in-depth outline for you. Now you can just share the outline with your writer, and they will know what to cover in the content properly.

#12. Write Exceptional Meta Titles

You’ve created the best content for your website and optimized it properly on the website, but you are having difficulties in writing a catchy meta title for your article. That’s where ChatGPT comes in, it gives you plenty of ideas for meta titles, and you can choose any one of them. Nowadays, ChatGPT written titles are outperforming human written titles.

Meta Titles Suggestion From ChatGPT

For example, I asked ChatGPT to give meta title suggestions for the keyword “Best Car Washes In United States,” and the screenshot of its response is given above. From the screenshot, you can see it has given 15 ideas for the keyword, and now we can choose any from them.

What Should You Not Be Doing With ChatGPT For SEO?

So far, we have explored only what can be done with ChatGPT for your SEO. However, ChatGPT is like a double-edged sword for digital marketers. There are also a couple of things that you should never be doing using ChatGPT for your SEO; otherwise, the outcomes may be disastrous. Let’s take a look at them:

#1. Generating Content

If you are planning to use ChatGPT to generate content (i.e. guest posts, related articles, etc.) on steroids for your SEO efforts, HOLD ON! You may be setting yourself up for a massive explosion later on.

Content generated by AI can be easily detected, and search engines (especially Google) have spent millions of dollars for several years to develop tools that can help their algorithms identify content that was generated using artificial intelligence. And AI-generated content — as expected — is a major violation of Google search guidelines. If your website is found using such content, it can be penalized and all your hardly acquired search traffic may vanish in little-to-no time.

And it’s not about Google alone. The OpenAI team, which developed ChatGPT, is also aware of the fact that its technology is being used to plagiarize the writing styles of others and mass-production of content for propaganda. So they too are working on a cryptographic watermark that will make the detection of ChatGPT-generated content a far simple affair. Anyone with a public key made available by OpenAI will be able to check if a piece of work was generated using ChatGPT.

So if you are thinking of passing on such content for guest posts to other bloggers instead of using it on your own site, think again about what impact it will have on your relations with them when they discover later on that you supplied them with AI-generated content and not your original work. Therefore, you should never use it for generating articles and other content.

#2. Using ChatGPT For High-Specialty Work

The second big mistake that you can make while working with ChatGPT is using it as a cheap alternative to the human workforce for high-specialty work (i.e. content editing and proofreading, content strategy, etc.) that requires expertise.

Jobs that require expertise and years of experience are best done by humans who have the sort of knowledge and expertise that’s required for them, and no matter how smart ChatGPT is it can’t serve as an alternative to that because humans learn not only from data but also from cognition. If you are replacing them with an AI tool, you’re eliminating that cognitive knowledge from your work, which can severely impact the quality of end results.

#3. Using It For Tasks That Involve Newer Topics Or Trends

ChatGPT has been trained using information and data that was available until 2021. It hasn’t been trained yet on any information or data that emerged after 2021, so you too, should keep this limitation in mind while working with it. For instance, if you are using it to generate FAQs for an article that you wrote, and your article is about something that happened after 2021, then the output may be highly unreliable. You should avoid using ChatGPT in such instances, or if you do, you should provide very detailed instructions.

ChatGPT is being touted as a revolutionary thing by many digital marketers, and undoubtedly it is. However, as we said above, it’s a double-edged sword that can cut your own hands if not used carefully. There’s a limit to what you should and should not do with ChatGPT for SEO, and we hope that we articulated them in enough detail for you.
