After creating a storm in the AI world with the release of ChatGPT, OpenAI has taken a step further and released GPT-4 on March 14, 2023. It will be exclusively available for ChatGPT plus users and via API for the developers and researchers.
It is claimed to be more precise and accurate as compared to the previous GPT models. The GPT-4 model can also process visual content! However, it could not overcome all the limitations of the previous model, and it still has the data limited to September 2021.
Microsoft confirmed that Bing was utilizing GPT-4 technology even before its official release.
We are going to go deeper and see how GPT-4 model is here to change the world. We will look at how its better than its predecessors and how it too has limitations. All in all, a complete picture on the latest technology!
Excited? Lets get into it straight up.
What Is GPT-4?
We would like to quote OpenAI on this one.
So, “Gpt-4 is a large multimodal model which accepts images and text inputs and generates text as well as image outputs. Besides, it is less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios. However, it exhibits human-like performance on various academic and professional benchmarks.”
So basically, GPT-4 is the fourth model in the GPT series that has the capability to accept both image and text inputs and generate text outputs.
GPT-4 is built and trained on Microsoft Azure AI supercomputers. The OpenAI team had to use supercomputers in order to train the innumerable data for GPT-4. Besides, Azure’s AI-optimized infrastructure allows GPT-4 to be delivered around the world.
How Is GPT-4 Different From ChatGPT?
Many people are confused between GPT-4 and ChatGPT. One basic difference that everyone should know is that ChatGPT is a chatbot that runs on one of the GPT models, and GPT-4 is the latest version of these GPT models.
As of today, ChatGPT is running on GPT 3.5 model, which can only process text inputs. GPT-4, on the other hand, has the capability to use image inputs in addition to text!
GPT-4 is claimed to be a better version than the previous GPT models by OpenAI team. GPT-4 can process and generate up to 25,000 words, compared with 3,000 words for ChatGPT.
Let us take a look at the fields in which GPT-4 outperforms the previous GPT models.
GPT-4 Can Generate Eight Times Longer Strings Of Texts
The context length of GPT-4 is increased by multiple folds from GPT 3.5, or in fact, GPT-4 can generate context that can be eight times more than the context produced by ChatGPT.
Open AI says that GPT-4 has a context length of 8,192 tokens.
GPT-4 Is More Precise And Accurate
The GPT-4 model has a broader spectrum of knowledge and can address the facts efficiently and accurately compared to GPT 3.5.
Moreover, the truthful Q&A and the model’s ability to separate factual data from incorrect statements have increased.
Additionally, OpenAI claims that GPT-4 is 40% more likely to produce information that is factual and on point.
GPT-4 Got Visual Capabilities!
The image inputs of GPT-4 are still not publically available and are being used for research purposes. Currently, all we can do is wait for the company to release the visual model of GPT-4.
However, on their research page, OpenAI has provided a few examples of visual usage of the GPT-4 model.
The example consisted of the user providing an image to the model and asking the model about what is funny in the image and to describe it panel by panel.
The answer given by GPT-4 was as follows.
GPT-4 Is An Expert In All Fields Of Study
GPT-4 has expertise in all fields of study, and it was able to answer complex questions related to medicine, healthcare, finances, computer programing, complex mathematical problems, etc.
However, the model is unlikely to display its knowledge each time you use it. It still needs to be trained more and tested by industry experts to become more precise.
GPT-4 Is Funnier!
GPT-4 is better than ChatGPT (GPT 3.5) at cracking jokes and is funnier enough to make a person smile. However, most of the jokes it cracks are dad jokes but are better than the previous GPT version.
Here is an example of jokes cracked by GPT-4.
GPT-4 Can Crack Most Of The Standardized tests.
GPT-4 is an incomparable test taker! Open AI claims that GPT-4 will outperform 90% of candidates if it was in a test with them. Fascinating right?
It has cracked multiple tests and scored great numbers on most of them. Apart from humans, GPT-4 also outperforms multiple machine learning models.
Few Examples of GPT-4 Performing well in Tests:
- GPT-4 scored 700 out of 800 marks in an SAT Math exam.
- Scored 710 out of 800 in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Quantitative exam.
While we talk about the good side, it’s important to talk about the lagging part as well. GPT-4 might be an excellent test taker, but it is still not the best.
Here is an example of GPT-4 scoring poorly in an exam:
- GPT-4 scored 2 on the AP English Language and Composition exam
However, in some tests, it could not score better than ChatGPT and cannot outperform it.
GPT-4 Is Better At Languages Than GPT-3.
The GPT-4 model is great at languages like Afrikaans, Italian and Turkish compared to chinchilla and palm, which are in English. Besides, the model also performs well with languages like Telugu and Marathi.
However, until now, English is its best language, and the model can be used at its best limits.
GPT-4 Is Safer Than ChatGPT.
We all knew how people exploited ChatGPT (GPT3.5) to write malicious hacking codes. Learning from that mistake, OpenAI’s team has worked hard to make GPT-4 safer.
GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to inappropriate requests and denies access to disallowed content. The Open AI team spent around six months making GPT-4 safer and more aligned.
OpenAI used human feedback, including the feedback submitted by ChatGPT users, to improve the behaviour of GPT-4. The team also worked with more than 50 experts in the field to maintain AI safety and security.
Limitations Of GPT-4
A human-developed machine can never avoid flaws. GPT-4 is undoubtedly more advanced than ChatGPT but still has considerable shortcomings that may affect its quality of responses.
Some of its significant limitations are hallucinations, adversarial prompts, and social biases.
Here are the major flaws observed in GPT-4 model explained in detail.
GPT-4 Is Trained On Data That Was Available Till September 2021.
The data provided to GPT-4 is limited until Septem 2021, and it cannot provide updates about the latest data. Moreover, if asked who won the FIFA world cup 2022, it replied that it was trained on the model, which is fed with the information that was available only till 2021.
GPT-4 Is Still Hallucinating, Like ChatGPT.
Despite being advanced compared to the ChatGPT model, GPT-4 has similar limitations. It still is not entirely reliable and creates errors while providing factual data. It hallucinates and drives its conclusions when it should provide the readers with the facts.
However, due to the increased accuracy of the model, it provides less hallucinated data compared to the previous models.
The following chart displays the internal factual evaluation by categories.
GPT-4 Lacks The Capabilities To Discuss The Future
GPT-4, when asked about the future, could not form hypotheses about the future. Besides, it created a scenario based on what others have said about the future on that topic instead of using its imagination and drawing conclusions on its own.
The Reasoning Capabilities Of GPT-4 Are Lacking.
GPT-4 solves the puzzles and reasoning questions accurately but is unable to provide an explanation and proper reasoning for its answer.
Take a look at the following example.
30% Of The Audience Still Prefers GPT-3.5
When OpenAI tested GPT-4 and GPT 3.5 simultaneously, it was found that only seven people out of 10 preferred the response given by GPT-4 and the rest three people would still choose the answers given by GPT-3.5. Hence, only 70% of the time, people would choose GPT-4 over GPT-3.5, which is not a remarkable response.
How Is GPT-4 Different From GPT-3.5?
Here are a few pointers that highlight the difference between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5:
- GPT 3.5 takes only text inputs, while GPT-4 accepts texts as well as images in inputs and later recognizes and analyses the picture.
- GPT-3.5 can provide outputs limited to 3,000 words, while GPT-4 can generate output with more than 25,000 words.
- GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for harmful content, while GPT-3.5 is just 40% likely to do so.
- GPT-4 can also respond in a Socratic conversation style, which means it can respond to questions with questions. This feature was not seen in GPT-3.5. Hence, ChatGPT users will now be able to change the tone and style of responses they want from the chatbot.
Apart from all these things, there were crazy rumours about the enlarged model size of GPT-4. However, Sam Altman (Founder of ChatGPT) declined them all in an interview. Later it was revealed that while GPT-3.5 has 175 billion parameters, GPT-4 is working on neural networks, and hence it is more potent as compared to the GPT-3.5 model.
