SearchGPT vs Google — The AI Search Engine Battle

SearchGPT can be the new way of searching that lurks on the horizon, set to challenge the traditional way you and I search for things digitally. From this SearchGPT vs Google analysis, we will understand if it is worth it or just another hyped Google killer!

Google revolutionized how people get answers to their questions. People also use the internet heavily these days. Google limited the number of days of research from books to a few hours and minutes.

Can this further be reduced with the superpower of artificial intelligence? Learn more about what the future of search engines looks like and how they can impact our daily searches on the internet via this comparison.

Will SearchGPT Replace Google?

From what we all know about SearchGPT, it’s still not fully developed or released.

Yet, it could replace Google for many daily activities. For example, if I am planning a weekend trip, I would rather use SearchGPT to find all the available details about the destination, things to do, plan an itinerary, etc., than spend hours on Google.

When fully integrated with ChatGPT and its other AI features, SearchGPT can potentially threaten Google’s dominance over the years. However, it’s going to take a long time for SearchGPT to replace traditional Google research entirely.

Although there are mixed reviews about it online, only time will tell.

SearchGPT vs Google – Critical Differences

Before I explain the actual differences in detail, let us get to know a summary of them:

  • SearchGPT is in its prototype stage and teases a new way to search using AI capabilities combined with conversational ability for understanding the search topic further.
  • Google is more accessible, reliable, and free to use as opposed to SearchGPT, for which the price is unknown.

SearchGPT Overview

SearchGPT is the upcoming new way to search that is still in the works by OpenAI. This new feature, in the prototype stage, is planned to be integrated within ChatGPT and can provide results for real-time information, just like Google.

However, this feature can also allow you to enhance the traditional search experience with conversational AI assistance.

This new feature can skip hours worth of time you invest and find answers quicker. OpenAI has also gotten into partnerships with top publications to support the accuracy of the data provided by SearchGPT.

Google Overview

Google, on the other hand, has been the market leader, and our post on Google statistics reveals the absolute dominance in the search engine market at 91.62%.

While OpenAI is still running the SearchGPT in a prototype version, Google has already launched its AI search overview feature long back. It combines the popular Google search experience powered with Google’s AI sensation – Gemini.

While OpenAI relies on partnerships with media publishers, Google has the advantage of tonnes of data stored over decades, adding to the reliability of its information.

Comparison Of SearchGPT And Google

Let me lay it out for you in further detail to estimate how this future Google competitor compares to provide a better experience.

1. Core Technologies

To set a common parameter for comparison, I considered the user intent that users would have for both services.

SearchGPT:

The OpenAI-powered SearchGPT is Large Language Model (LLM) based and possesses Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities.

With this access, it has the potential for more comprehensive and contextually relevant responses. Add that to the already existing ChatGPT features like AI image generation, analyzing files and images, using GPTs, and much more.

Google:

Google, on the other hand, offers a traditional search engine experience based on keyword-based search algorithms. It is an extensive web index that has a huge archive of websites and web pages from which users can find answers.

The new introduction of the AI overview already provides a combined experience of the past and the future.

Verdict: Considering the technological aspects and AI model capabilities, if integrated well, SearchGPT can challenge Google.

2. Functionality

For the next parameter of comparison, let us focus on the differences between the functional use of both search experiences.

SearchGPT:

The newly announced SearchGPT offers a conversational interface on a separate website or app, i.e., the ChatGPT website and app.

Apart from searching for user queries using the Internet, SearchGPT can generate human-quality text and has the potential for more complex queries and responses.

“AI search is going to become one of the key ways that people navigate the internet, and it’s crucial, in these early days, that the technology is built in a way that values, respects, and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI in the process and creating a new way for readers to discover The Atlantic.”

  • Nicholas Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic

However, visiting the ChatGPT website or using the mobile app is a mandate for using SearchGPT.

Google:

Google provides traditional search on any device. You do not need to have a special app to use Google, as every phone, at least Android ones, now have Google integrated into it.

By sharing links to relevant web pages, Google allows users to check top results for the closest accurate solution to what they are looking for.

If it requires advanced AI capabilities, Google also has its own AI chatbot – Gemini, which is quite promising in itself, as found from this Gemini Advanced vs ChatGPT Plus comparison we covered earlier.

Verdict: SearchGPT can be functional with AI but cannot beat the functionality and accessibility that Google provides.

3. Advantages And Disadvantages

Both provide different types of experience and have unique advantages and disadvantages. Let me show you where these two search assistants shine and where they don’t.

SearchGPT:

The main advantage of SearchGPT is that it can provide more comprehensive responses, has a conversational interface, and can provide the reader with a solution within one single response.

However, this has disadvantages, including the potential for inaccuracies and limitations in providing real-time information.

Since the results are source-dependent, you must cross-check every information shared. A potential disadvantage may also include an added subscription cost to use the feature.

Google:

The most significant advantages of using Google over SearchGPT are the free access, the vast web index, reliable search results, and the ability to read more than just a summary of the required results.

The downside to using the old search method is the added user effort to find relevant information, which is apparently an advantage in some cases.

Verdict: Given the available information, SearchGPT raises many questions and highlights more disadvantages than Google.

Potential Impact Of SearchGPT On Traditional Search

The currently available information about SearchGPT compared to traditional search suggests that it is a promising future way to search.

However, it is intriguing to see how OpenAI overcomes the limitations and challenges that SearchGPT currently faces and those that may arise in the future.

While competitors like Perplexity also exist in the market, OpenAI will have to come up with something big to attract and lure those users. For more context, read more about the comparison between SearchGPT and Perplexity

On the other hand, even before the SearchGPT was launched, Google was ready to respond to AI-powered search competition with an AI overview.

The future for AI-based search results looks to be a crowded space soon, but how many can deliver the perfect solution to the reader is still unknown.

Future Outlook Of SearchGPT vs Google

While it looks like OpenAI might be the ant that can move the mountain like Google, we will only know when the service goes live for general use.

When SearchGPT is integrated into ChatGPT, we can expect many potential improvements and updates. The only concern that hovers around my head is the speculation of the price that OpenAI may charge for SearchGPT.

Google is evolving, too! They announced new generative AI experiences spread across the Google suite of tools. This is bound to elevate the experience that current Google users have using the service.

Conclusion: Google Would Be A Better Choice Than SearchGPT

When it becomes widely available, I would probably consider using SearchGPT for a week or two only. But will it replace my preference for using Google? Absolutely not.

The reason is, as someone who needs to be creative and develop ideas for the major part of the work, relying on AI-summarized or gathered information can be harmful.

As Google as a search engine also prefers user-first content, I doubt if SearchGPT could provide the first-case answers that I would rather get from a personal blog, a Reddit thread, or a comment on YouTube.

AI integrated into traditional search engines may sound fascinating, but it surely does not look like a deal breaker for me.
