Note: Once your domain is into the expiry period, there can be bids (backorders) that can be taken from an interested party to buy your expired domain immediately. However, the owner gets a priority first to renew their domain than new bidders.

Dropped Domain vs. Non-dropped Domain

I would like to share some key technical terms and the differences that you should know about an expired domain:

1. Dropped Domain – A dropped domain is when the domain is not completely expired and can still be recovered during the grace period without a penalty. Once it is past the grace period, and into the redemption period, you can still recover your domain, but at a higher price.

2. Non-dropped Domain – When the domain is live and well up and running for 1 – 10 years.

What happens to expired domains?

When a domain expires, and the owner does not claim it during the grace and redemption period, the platform removes the access and lists it for an auction or can even keep it to itself. As the grace period of a domain starts, people can still reach your website, but its services would effectively stop working. 

Once the domain reaches its redemption period, it completely loses the ability for users to visit the page and enters the pending delete phase, where it becomes available to be sold.

For instance, if you are buying an expired domain that is related to food, you have to work your way around and build it related to food itself and not related to finance.

Here are all the critical things that should be on your checklist:

1. Relevancy of the Niche – The niche of the domain is important and should be relevant to your project. A site with less DR, but relevant is much better than an irrelevant high DR domain.
2. Domain Rating (DR) – The DR affects the way your new website will rank and also affects the price of the expired domain.
3. Domain Age – The older the domain the higher the chances of it picking up on the search engines faster and hence holding more value. Use a WHOIS tool to verify the same.
4. Google Index status – Check if the website has not faced any penalty in the past by Google. You can use the Google search console to find out more about this.

Note:  Combining the above two points is also a factor; a higher DR with an irrelevant niche will not get you the traffic that a relevant niche expired domain with a lower DR can. It is really important to understand this equation before you invest your money in the auction.

Coming to the main part of actually buying a domain, some parameters further need consideration after you’ve set your eye on a specific domain. I will share below the exact same approach that I used to pick an expired domain a few months back.

1. Find a niche 

First things first, find out the niche that you would want to build a project on by using some of the premier SEO tools. This will help you focus on a smaller area and keep your time and research concise. 

2. Check if the domain is available 

Once you have finalized your niche, you can check if the domain names related to your niche and around the keyword you wish to target are available. 

Note: This will not be a cakewalk and will test your patience to the limits. The idea that you’ve gotten can most probably be picked up by someone already! 

While this is completely normal and has happened to me, too, you need to come up with creative names and ideas that can help you stand out while also staying relevant. 

3. Sign up with a domain platform

Once you have found the target, you need to be signed up with the platform selling a particular domain. They usually charge a fee as per the winning bid or offer annual membership of their platform to be able to place a bid.

4. Place your bid or a backorder

If you’ve found your domain that is available, do not waste time and putting in a strong bid by analyzing the domain expiry date, the phase of the cycle that the domain is in, your earlier report on the domain, and your budget.

A backorder is basically a reservation that you can make for a domain that just hit it’s expiry date. You get an opportunity to snatch the domain the moment the owner fails to renew. 

This however, does not guarantee you the domain and is dependent on the owner’s renewal and other bids. If there are more people interested, then this domain will go into a standard auction process.

5. Proxy Bidding 

This is a service where the platforms can place a bid in your place. Once someone places a higher bid than you, the platform will place the least required increase in your bid to make you the highest bidder within the ceiling set by you.

6. Completing the purchase

Once you have won the auction, you can now complete the payment and the formalities necessary. The domain then will be transferred to your account in 7-14 days, making you the owner finally! 

Registering an expired Domain

Once you become the owner, you should register the domain to your name. I would always advise you to stress more on this to avoid future conflicts with anyone claiming your domain (yes, this happens!)
