How Does Grammarly Chrome Extension Work: Use Cases

Previously, the extension was not entirely reliable as it failed to pick up a lot of mistakes compared to the website version.

However, with the constant updates, the extension now works exceptionally well. Once you have installed the extension, you might be curious to know how does it work exactly?

The good news is you don’t need to do anything to use the Grammarly extension. As long as you have an active internet connection, the extension will start working automatically.

Additionally, you can also pin your Grammarly extension from your toolbox. This will allow you to access the settings anytime you need without wandering around and finding Grammarly. From your top right corner, tap on the puzzle icon. From here, you can click on the pin option next to Grammarly.

Now let’s take a look at different use cases for Grammarly Chrome Extension. We will also take a look at how you can customize the settings and explore options for specific applications.

Note: I have considered major applications, but there are no particular restrictions on where you can use the extension.

1. Grammarly For Google Docs

Students and professionals widely use Google Docs. Whether you want to write an assignment or want to create a rough draft of your content/email, Google Docs makes it easier to write and edit your content.

If you use Google Docs most often for writing, adding a Grammarly extension will be the cherry on top!

After installing the extension, you can directly use Grammarly inside your Google Docs. At the bottom-left corner of your screen, you can see Grammarly’s logo and the corrections. Additionally, it works similarly to how it works on the app and the rest of the browser.

Grammarly For Google Docs

You can see grammar errors underlined in red, wordy or complex structures underlined in blue, delivery in purple and synonyms in green. You can tap on the corrections to make changes or dismiss them if you think the suggestion is incorrect.

While the suggestions are visible through underlines, some errors may not be shown as underlined. However, you can tap on the Grammarly icon below to see the remaining corrections. Furthermore, you can also check for plagiarism through the built-in plagiarism checker.

Next, you can click on the board icon at the top if you want to customize the settings.

Also note that if you change the settings of your Grammarly account through the website, the changes will be applied to others, too (for language settings).

2. Google Docs for Gmail

With Gmail being a popular platform, I often indulge in sending and receiving emails through Gmail. Irrespective of your task, you can use Grammarly for Gmail to craft an error-free email.

Similar to how Grammarly works on other platforms, the extension will be embedded directly into Gmail. When creating a new email, you can copy-paste or write from scratch. Either way, Grammarly will automatically detect errors and suggest corrections.

One of the best parts about the extension is that you don’t need to go to the Grammarly website or app. You can make changes inside Gmail only. Furthermore, you can also change settings and customize it as per your needs from Gmail.

If you want to customize the settings, you can tap on the Grammarly icon shown below. Next, click on the settings icon at the top corner of the pop-up window. Now you can see the settings and change them.

Quick Settings

This is an incredible option for working professionals who have to send emails frequently. You can also save time by rewriting into different platforms, as you can start crafting your email within the app and use Grammarly to polish your final email before sending it.

If you want to make additional changes to the settings, you can tap on “all settings”, which will redirect you to the Grammarly website. From here, you can change all the settings, and it will be applied to your account. So note here that if you are making changes to the settings through one platform, it will automatically change the settings everywhere else where you are using Grammarly too.

3. Grammarly For LinkedIn

If you are a content creator on LinkedIn or like to post on the platform, you can ensure your post is fully-free of errors and polished before it goes live. Thanks to the Grammarly extension for Chrome, you can now use Grammarly on LinkedIn.

The best part is you can not only use it for corrections on your post but also use the extension when sending messages on LinkedIn. This feature comes in handy when you are working and speaking to someone about your work.

Grammarly For LinkedIn

For instance, if you are speaking to your potential client, you don’t want to send a wrong impression by sending a message with grammatical mistakes and words that don’t blend with your ideas.

This is where the Grammarly extension will save you. Grammarly will underline the errors, which you can correct with one click. Once you check your message with Grammarly, you can hit send!

Similar to Gmail, you can tap on the settings icon to change the settings. Moreover, you can also turn off Grammarly by tapping the power button beside the Grammarly icon.

4. Grammarly For Medium

Medium is an excellent platform to showcase your blogging and writing skills. If you are a Medium user, you can wave goodbye to your time-consuming copy-pasting to check errors with the extension. Grammarly extension for Chrome works similarly to LinkedIn, Gmail, and other platforms.

You can also access all the premium features through Medium, including vocabulary checks, wordy sentences, and more.

What to Do When Grammarly Logo Doesn’t Show Up: Troubleshooting

Sometimes Grammarly logo may not show up on the application you are using. This often happens due to issues with Grammarly or internet connectivity.

I have sometimes encountered a problem with the Grammarly logo not popping up. Thankfully, I found a few reliable solutions for resolving the issue.

  • Restart Your Chrome

One of the quickest methods to fix the issue is to close and restart Chrome. Wait for a few minutes until you restart and check if it’s working.

  • Check if the extension is enabled

Sometimes even after installing the extension, it may not be enabled, so the Grammarly extension won’t work anywhere. You can check by going to chrome://extensions/ and enabling it.

  • Remove and reinstall the extension.

You can remove the extension from your computer or laptop from the files and install it again by following the method I shared in the beginning.

However, if you are still unable to see the Grammarly logo after trying all these methods, your internet connection may be unstable or weak. You can cross-check your internet connectivity and check in a while.

In case of additional, help, you can contact Grammarly’s customer support.

Is Grammarly Chrome Extension Reliable?

When Grammarly rolled out an extension for Chrome, I decided to give it a try. I still count on the Chrome extension for majority of my tasks.

While you can use it almost everywhere, it cannot be termed as 100% reliable. As someone who uses Grammarly regularly, I have encountered a lot of glitches.

For example, when it shows complex words and suggests corrections to make them shorten, you can see it either not making changes or changing the entire structure of your sentence.

Additionally, I also noticed a lot of errors go unnoticed on the extension compared to the Grammarly app or website. Another loophole in the extension is missing out on important errors. Sometimes, it may ask you to change a certain word by suggesting synonyms. However, these synonyms may not be relevant to what you are writing or be out of context.

If you correct your sentences according to the suggestions recommended by Grammarly without cross-checking them, there are chances your content may not be as you want it.
